## Description

Better Field Groups for ACF is a lightweight enhancement plugin that improves the
editing experience for WordPress sites using Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) and also
Secure Custom Fields (SCF). The plugin removes the small edit icons that appear
in field group titles throughout the WordPress admin, creating a cleaner, more professional
interface that reduces confusion and prevents accidental navigation to field group
settings.

When you’re using ACF to create custom fields for your content types, each field
group displays a small cogwheel/edit icon in its title bar. While useful for developers
and site administrators, these icons can be distracting and potentially problematic
when content editors and clients are working with posts and pages. Clicking these
icons takes users to the field group configuration screen, which most content editors
should never need to access.

Better Field Groups for ACF solves this problem by completely hiding these edit
icons site-wide on all post editing screens, while preserving all ACF functionality.
The result is a cleaner, more focused editing experience that keeps content creators
focused on their content rather than getting distracted by technical configuration
options.

 * **Cleaner Interface**: Removes clutter from the post editor by hiding unnecessary
edit icons that don’t serve content editors
 * **Prevents User Confusion**: Eliminates the risk of content editors accidentally
clicking edit icons and ending up in technical configuration screens they shouldn’t
   access
 * **Automatic Edit Icon Removal**: Instantly hides all field group edit icons across
   your WordPress admin
 * **Zero Configuration**: Works immediately upon activation with no settings to
   configure or maintain.
 * **Zero Database Impact**: Uses pure CSS solution with no database modifications
   or stored settings
 * **Lightweight Code**: Minimal resource usage with optimized, performance-focused
   implementation
 * **Post Editor Focus**: Only targets post and page editing screens, leaving other
   admin areas unchanged
 * **Plugin Safety**: Can be activated and deactivated safely with zero risk to
   existing field groups or data
 * **Multi-Plugin Support**: Compatible with both ACF and SCF plugins
 * **Developer Safe**: Doesn’t interfere with ACF’s core functionality or field
   group management

### Perfect For

 * **Content Agencies**: Creating cleaner interfaces for client content management
 * **Enterprise Websites**: Reducing complexity for non-technical content teams
 * **Educational Sites**: Preventing students/staff from accessing technical settings
 * **Membership Sites**: Streamlining the editor experience for community managers
 * **E-commerce Stores**: Focusing product managers on content rather than configuration
 * **Blog Networks**: Standardizing the editing experience across multiple sites

### Requirements

 * WordPress 6.0 or higher
 * PHP 7.4 or higher
 * Advanced Custom Fields (Free or Pro) OR Secure Custom Fields
 * Must be activated on sites where ACF/SCF field groups are actively used

## FAQ

### Why did you create Better Field Groups for ACF?

Better Field Groups for ACF was originally developed to address the lack of custom
display titles for field groups that would show more user-friendly names to content
editors. After waiting years for this feature to be added to Advanced Custom Fields,
we developed our own solution. Ironically, shortly after we completed our plugin
development, ACF released this exact feature in version 6.6! However, we discovered
that many users still needed a way to completely remove edit icons for a cleaner
interface, so we pivoted Better Field Groups for ACF to focus on this specific need
that ACF doesn’t address.

### Does Better Field Groups for ACF work with both ACF Free and ACF Pro?

Yes! Better Field Groups for ACF works seamlessly with both the Free version and
Pro version of Advanced Custom Fields. The plugin detects whichever version you
have installed and applies the interface improvements automatically.

### Does Better Field Groups for ACF work with Secure Custom Fields (SCF)?

Absolutely! Better Field Groups for ACF also works with Secure Custom Fields since
SCF uses the same interface structure as Advanced Custom Fields. The plugin will
detect either ACF or SCF and work accordingly.

### Will Better Field Groups for ACF break my existing field groups or data?

No, Better Field Groups for ACF is completely safe and non-destructive. The plugin
only adds CSS styling to hide edit icons – it doesn’t modify any existing ACF functionality,
database data, or field group configurations. You can activate and deactivate Better
Field Groups for ACF safely with zero consequences to your content or field groups.

### What happens to my edit icons if I deactivate Better Field Groups for ACF?

When you deactivate Better Field Groups for ACF, all edit icons will immediately
become visible again exactly as they were before. No data is lost, no functionality
is changed, and everything returns to the default ACF appearance instantly.

### Does Better Field Groups for ACF interfere with field group management for administrators?

Better Field Groups for ACF only hides Field Group edit icons on post and page editing
screens. Administrators and developers can still access field group settings through
the normal ACF admin menu (Custom Fields > Field Groups). The plugin doesn’t prevent
access to field group management – it only removes the quick-edit icons from the
content editing interface.

### Can I still access field group settings after installing Better Field Groups for ACF?

Yes! Better Field Groups for ACF only removes the edit icons from post editing screens.
You can still access all field group settings by going to **Custom Fields > Field
Groups** in your WordPress admin menu. All ACF functionality remains completely
intact and accessible.

### Will Better Field Groups for ACF slow down my website?

No, Better Field Groups for ACF is designed for optimal performance. The plugin
only loads a small amount of CSS on post editing screens in the admin area, and
has zero impact on your website’s frontend performance. It’s one of the most lightweight
ACF enhancement plugins available.

### Does Better Field Groups for ACF work with custom post types?

Yes! Better Field Groups for ACF works with all post types including custom post
types, pages, posts, and any other content type where ACF field groups are displayed.
The clean interface improvement applies universally across your entire WordPress
admin.

### Is Better Field Groups for ACF compatible with other ACF addon plugins?

Better Field Groups for ACF is designed to be fully compatible with other ACF addon
plugins and extensions. Since it only adds CSS to hide edit icons, it doesn’t interfere
with ACF’s core functionality or other plugins that extend ACF capabilities.

### Do I need to configure anything after installing Better Field Groups for ACF?

No configuration is needed! Better Field Groups for ACF works immediately upon activation.
There are no settings pages, configuration options, or setup steps required. Simply
activate the plugin and enjoy the cleaner editing interface right away.

### Can I use Better Field Groups for ACF on multisite installations?

Yes, Better Field Groups for ACF works perfectly on WordPress multisite installations.
You can network activate it to apply the improvements across all sites in your network,
or activate it individually on specific sites as needed.

### What if I only want to hide edit icons for certain user roles?

Currently, Better Field Groups for ACF hides edit icons for all users on post editing
screens. Please open a support ticket if you want to see this in a future version.

### Does Better Field Groups for ACF work with Gutenberg and Classic Editor?

Yes! Better Field Groups for ACF works with both the Gutenberg block editor and
the Classic Editor. The edit icon hiding functionality applies regardless of which
editor you’re using on your WordPress site.

### Is Better Field Groups for ACF translation ready?

Yes, Better Field Groups for ACF includes full internationalization support and
can be translated into any language. Translation files are included and the plugin
follows WordPress translation best practices.

### How do I know if Better Field Groups for ACF is working?

After activating Better Field Groups for ACF, simply edit any post or page that
has ACF field groups. You’ll notice that the small edit/cogwheel icons are no longer
visible in the field group title bars, creating a cleaner appearance.
