AWStats<\/a> is a free log file analysis\ntool for web servers. It consists of a collection of Perl scripts that analyse\nApache-style access logs and produce graphical web pages with extended information\nabout the visits.<\/p>\n\n

Browser Data Collection<\/h4>\n\n

AWStats can collect information about the browser capabilities and screen size,\nbut that requires embedding a <script><\/code> HTML tag in all the pages. This calls\na JavaScript function contained in the file awstats_misc_tracker.js<\/code> that will \nreport the extra data to the web server in a specific HTTP GET request. An \nextended explanation is provided in the AWStats FAQ<\/a><\/p>\n\n

This plugin simplifies the job of adding the required <script><\/code> tag and provides\nthe latest stable version of the awstats_misc_tracker.js<\/code> file, both in extended\nand \"minified\" version using the Yahoo YUI Compressor<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Placing the Script<\/h4>\n\n

To speed-up the page rendering, the <script><\/code> tag is best placed at the bottom\nof the page. This is the preferred option for WordPress themes that have a footer.\nIf the theme doesn't have a footer, the tag is added to the page header. This\nbehaviour can be controlled using the plugin's settings page. This has been \nborrowed from the Google Analyticator<\/a> plugin by Ronald Heft Jr.<\/p>\n\n

No Logging for Administrators<\/h4>\n\n

The plugin also allows administrators to remove themselves and their visits from \nthe AWStats log. There is a field in the settings page where we can enter the user\nlevel (a number from 0 to 10) above which the plugin will omit the <script><\/code> tag.<\/p>\n\n\n

  1. Upload the awstats-script<\/code> directory to the \/wp-content\/plugins\/<\/code> directory<\/li>\n
  2. Activate the plugin through the 'Plugins' menu in WordPress<\/li>\n
  3. Configure and enable the plugin in the 'AWStats Script' Options page<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n
